Ref Card: Getting Started with OpenStack

Founded in 2010, OpenStack is an open source Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform used to manage large quantities of compute storage and networking resources contained in a data center. It’s one of the fastest growing open source communities in the world, with over 400 companies and 18,000 contributors utilizing it.

Projections published in the OpenStack Pulse 2014 report from 451 Research indicate that OpenStack-based market revenue is expected to exceed $3 billion by 2018.

This reference card, titled “Getting Started with OpenStack” is a comprehensive overview of the platform, which includes information about the latest adoption trends, delivery mechanisms, key terms and quick...

I pity the fool who missed the best OpenStack Summit yet…

Last week over 6,000 stackers met at the Vancouver Convention Centre for the OpenStack Summit. The venue—a half-million square foot marvel of glass, wood, and green construction—offered picturesque views of Vancouver Harbour, a breathtaking backdrop for the hard work of crafting the next rev of OpenStack software, code named Liberty.

Here are my top five takeaways from the week:

1. Serious Enterprise Adoption is Getting All the Press

Big enterprises like WalMart and TD Bank have jumped on the OpenStack train, and pioneers like CERN, Best Buy and Comcast are rapidly growing their deployments. But media coverage of the event didn’t just focus on the big brands: smaller enterprises like DigitalFilm Tree...

Three Clouds, One Architecture: Blue Box Delivers Enterprise Private Cloud in Flavors

Three Clouds, One Architecture: Blue Box Delivers Enterprise Private Cloud in Flavors

At the OpenStack Summit in Vancouver today, we announced two expansions to the Blue Box Cloud product lineup. Both advance our strategy to give enterprises the private cloud infrastructure they need, on their terms, without the hassle and engineering overhead of having to run their own infrastructure.

In addition to our hosted Blue Box Cloud Standard edition, there’s now hosted Blue Box Cloud Enterprise edition, as well as a rapidly approaching GA date on our Blue Box Cloud On-Prem for Enterprises.

Let’s take each in turn.

Blue Box Cloud Enterprise edition

Blue Box Cloud Enterprise edition is the first of our two announcements today. It’s a new, enhanced version of...

Unleash the Hydra…I Mean Hybrid Cloud

Unleash the Hydra…I Mean Hybrid Cloud

In Greek mythology, the Hydra is a multi-headed monster which grows two heads where one is cut off, quickly overpowering all who attempt to bring it under control. A hybrid cloud deployment done wrong can also escalate into something fierce and unpredictable. BUT! Done right, a hybrid cloud combining elements of both private and public cloud can successfully accomplish what neither can achieve alone.

When the OpenStack Foundation first reached out to us about a project to develop a hybrid cloud solution in concert with HP and digital post-production film company, DigitalFilm Tree, we couldn’t possibly say no, especially given our background in hybrid cloud deployments.

We understand the value of a hybrid cloud strategy for the media industry, having worked with a variety of...

Docker Docker Docker OpenStack

Docker Docker Docker OpenStack

When OpenStack aficionados gather in Vancouver in a couple of weeks, one of the hot topics will be containers, a “new” alternative to virtualization. Actually, container technology has been around for a couple of decades, but it is trending among the IT community at a fever pitch these days and stands to have a huge impact on the future of cloud computing.
The appeal of container technology is easy to appreciate. In a nutshell, containers can enable you to run many more applications on the same hardware than using hypervisors and virtual machines, and they can greatly enhance the application development process with their portability and almost instantaneous startup time.

Docker…

One of the hottest container technologies is...

Why We Win with Blue Box Cloud

Why We Win with Blue Box Cloud

Private Cloud as a Service (PCaaS) is a powerful model, but its value is often misunderstood. During the first year of Blue Box Cloud general availability, the most consistent question I received was, “Why an OpenStack hosted private cloud?” And the answer can be distilled down to these concepts:
  • Security
  • Compliance
  • Control
  • Performance

Our success in offering Blue Box Cloud can be traced back to one or more of these concepts in most cases, and it’s my intent to explain each of them to enable clear discussion with those evaluating a hosted, managed private cloud like ours.

SECURITY: IT IS PRIVATE CLOUD, AFTER ALL

Security is the most basic value-add of Blue Box...

Hope Ale Be Seeing You at OpenStack Summit

Hope Ale Be Seeing You at OpenStack Summit

OpenStack Summit is just on the horizon (no pun intended), and once again it's in our backyard: beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia! This will be the fourth summit I've attended.

The first was in Portland, another fantastic Pacific Northwest town, just after my first OpenStack project. I met lots of new people and made some great connections that have been invaluable over time. The following year, I attended the Atlanta summit where I spoke on a couple of topics and had many great hallway and barroom conversations that deepened the relationships I'd...

HIMSS15: Healthcare Needs a Cloud Wellness Plan

HIMSS15: Healthcare Needs a Cloud Wellness Plan

The healthcare world is often overwhelming, and as a first time HIMSS exhibitor we were amazed at the scale and complexity of the event, not to mention the number of “cloud” providers who didn’t actually offer cloud services.

The frenzy of activity at HIMSS15 was a fitting reflection of the overwhelming nature of the healthcare system. Fortunately, we got better and better at navigating the show as the conference progressed, made great connections and left with significant promise for building new relationships in the industry.

The mammoth size and scope of the show serves as a fitting metaphor for...

Good, Bad & Ugly at Interop Cloud Connect

Let’s Go “All In” at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas

If you’re headed to Interop the week of April 27, stop by and see the Blue Box team at booth 943. And I hope you’ll join me in the Cloud Connect track.

Have you been wondering if OpenStack is worth betting on?

I’ll be presenting a 30-minute session on Wednesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 3:00 pm. In “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of OpenStack Operations”, I’ll share in detail what it takes to actually operate an OpenStack cloud in production, drawing on three years of first-hand experience operating OpenStack clouds...
