The Zombie Apocalypse and Other Cloud Infrastructure Concerns

The Zombie Apocalypse and Other Cloud Infrastructure Concerns

Last month, I returned from an overseas trip to a friend’s wedding to find the zombie apocalypse happening in my neighborhood near downtown San Jose. People of all ages and demographics united together in what looked like strange cult gatherings in public parks, stumbling around the streets of the South Bay with eyes glued to their phones and occasionally yelling something strange like, "OMG I hatched a Nidoking!" Cars would come to abrupt halts in front of me at unexplained times—I half expected a scene from the movie Zombieland to unfold where Woody Harrelson would leap out from an SUV ready to give me the nickname Minnesota and help navigate safely back to my parents’ farm.

Pokémon Go was released in the US on July 6, 2016. Unless you’ve been living off the grid in a yurt (in which case you won’t be reading this blog post), you’ve probably observed that this was much more than a game release and more like the dawn of a new way of life for some people. While there have been well-publicized challenges as the game has scaled to reach millions,...

EuroPython 2016: Pythonic Epicenter in the Heart of Basque Country

EuroPython 2016: Pythonic Epicenter in the Heart of Basque Country

I have been involved in the Python community in different capacities for years. First as a user of the language, then as conference attendee followed by a position as tutorials committee chair and representative at the PSF and different PSF-sponsored events. This year I had the great privilege to be representing them at EuroPython in picturesque and scenic heart of Basque Country: Bilbao, Spain.
Bilbao Landscape

It was an amazing experience: from talking to — literally — hundreds of Pythonistas, to the after-hour social events and seeing the embracing and welcoming Python community in action. The conference is super well-organized and packed to the brim with top-notch content: amazing keynotes, a deluge of talks to choose from, lightning talks and open spaces. There was a lot of...

The IBM internal GitHub Enterprise system Running on Blue Box

The IBM internal GitHub Enterprise system Running on Blue Box

Tasked with helping transform IBM, a year ago, our CIO office’s Whitewater team selected Github Enterprise as the next-generation software repository for IBM’s engineering teams. And while I’m not one to celebrate technology birthdays, IBM's GitHub Enterprise deployment is getting an awesome gift, wrapped in a big Blue Box.

;‐)

IBM’s Github Enterprise installation is one of the largest in the world: nearly 13,000 IBMers rely on it for their daily work. And now, it’s running on an instance of IBM Blue Box Dedicated [RC1], serving up more than 1,000 Web requests per minute. Moving GHE@IBM outside the firewall brings a major improvement in the user experience by eliminating the need for clients to...

Getting Started with Kubernetes on IBM Blue Box

Getting Started with Kubernetes on IBM Blue Box

Kubernetes is an open source container cluster manager. It can automate the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. While deploying individual containers with something like Docker Machine is nice, for actual production applications, they generally require coordinating many containers of many different types.

That's where container cluster management comes in with Kubernetes and other technologies like Docker Swarm and Mesos. If you're not familiar with Kubernetes (often abbreviated as K8s), there's a number of great getting started and overview guides, including this cool piece: The Children's Illustrated Guide to Kubernetes.

Deploying Kubernetes

Wow! Kubernetes looks pretty cool,...

Load Balancing as a Service on IBM Blue Box

Load Balancing as a Service on IBM Blue Box

Hey everyone, I'd like to talk today about creating and operating an LBaaSv2 load balancer on a Managed IBM Blue Box OpenStack cloud. Let's start out with the command line arguments, and we can run quickly through the Horizon GUI version of the process later. This is going to be a simple execution, we're going to balance some NGINX instances for our example, just to show how the service works and how easy it is to setup.

To start, let's take a look at the environment we have. I've got four instances running, one with a floating IP that I'm using to access the group:

$ nova list | grep LBaaS
| 8a12ef61-eed0-4adf-b1b4-60ce3e355f0d | LBaaS-1 | ACTIVE | - | Running | internal=192.168.1.141, 169.45.113.53|
| 2b098fd4-b9e3-4602-99fa-96ae7348d78e | LBaaS-2 | ACTIVE | - | Running |...

M-m-m-my Mitaka

Today, we finalized our latest release based on Mitaka, the 13th release of OpenStack. Since IBM Blue Box manages OpenStack private clouds on behalf of our customers, we have initiated the upgrade process to Mitaka for customer clouds.

Maintenance downtime is costly for any cloud customer—we get it, time is money. As a result, IBM Blue Box has invested heavily in tools, team and processes plus the experience of hundreds of OpenStack upgrades to ensure the in-place upgrade to Mitaka is a non-event. The team expects to have the majority of customer clouds on Mitaka by the end of July.

Mitaka brings a lot...
