Big Game Hunting… In Paris???

Big Game Hunting… In Paris???

So here’s the scenario: I’m in Paris at the OpenStack Summit Fall 2014 and I’m on the hunt. I’m looking for the perfect partner to help us get this hot new offering, the Blue Box Cloud, Private Cloud as a Service (PCaaS) to market and I have some very specific criteria in mind.

I’m looking for an agile, mature, focused partner who values the cloud, who has a practice already spun up around OpenStack, who has trusted relationship in markets and verticals we’re not already in that’s looking for a differentiator technology offering to help solve real production-level customer problems and wants to move fast.

This partner has to be a true hybrid with...

Four things I’d like to accomplish as your OpenStack Foundation board member

I’m running for Individual Director of the OpenStack Foundation. Some may suggest sitting on the board of a foundation as large and complex as OpenStack may be a fools errand, but let me suggest to you why I’m excited at the opportunity.

It’s my belief that the key priority of the board is to preserve our community’s focus and mitigate distractions: to help the community flourish. That’s a monumental task considering the environment of meteoric success OpenStack has enjoyed. Few would have rationally guessed back in September of 2012 that the Foundation would have achieved such formidable traction this fast....

We like moving fast, so does Mendix

We like moving fast, so does Mendix

If we’ve said it once here at Blue Box, we’ve said it a thousand times, “let companies focus on application development, not on infrastructure.”
Blue Box Cloud was developed to do just that. Now we’re combining forces with Mendix, whose rapid app dev platform makes deploying apps to Blue Box Cloud as easy as a single click!

Mendix and Blue Box share a common passion for helping technology companies achieve and maintain a genuine competitive advantage in a world where there are two choices--innovate or perish. As much as the corporate IT department might want to keep up with cloud infrastructure needs, the demand from both the business and the market are often too much to handle without emerging...

Yes, Distros Are Still Doing it Wrong

Yes, Distros Are Still Doing it Wrong

Last month at the OpenStack Summit in Paris, I pressed that point rather strenuously during the “Ask the Experts” panel. The panel also included Jan Mark Holzer of Red Hat, Kenneth Hui of EMC, Caroline McCrory of Gigaom, Manju Ramanathpura of Hitachi Data Systems, and Boris Renski of Mirantis. The panel was moderated by Greg Knieriemen of Hitachi Data Systems.

The session generated a lot of attention and conversation, so I thought it might be useful to reiterate the key points as we push onward to the Kilo release, making decisions about the product roadmap for OpenStack next year and beyond. Specifically, I’ll talk about why distros are a dead end for most enterprises that still need a private cloud, what PCaaS is all about, how we...

Mirror mirror on the wall; why has private cloud been the scariest of all?

Mirror mirror on the wall; why has private cloud been the scariest of all?

Deploying and operating cloud technology, including private cloud is uniquely difficult and often falls outside the core competencies of most organizations. As a result, many on-premises private cloud installations falter, casting a shadow of doubt on private cloud as a solution in general, and often adding tarnish onto OpenStack as the leading private cloud technology. Yet private clouds come with a unique set of benefits (including control, security, performance management, and more) that continue to drive widespread interest.

There must be a better way… In this blog post, I want to talk about a few of the more recent examples of folks discussing the challenges of private cloud implementation, touch on a definitional hurdle that must be overcome, and propose that private cloud as a Service is a cloud consumption methodology that can make private cloud implementations successful for organizations of...
