Voting is Open for OpenStack Summit Tokyo

Voting is Open for OpenStack Summit Tokyo

It’s that time of year again. I don’t just mean the time to sip cocktails on a sunny beach (or fork over $5 for a cup of the neighborhood kids’ super-sour lemonade). It’s time to vote on sessions for the OpenStack Summit in Tokyo. Experts from Blue Box, an IBM Company have something for everyone, from containers to case studies; from monitoring to meetups–a total of nineteen presentations feature Blue Boxers. Here’s a summary:

Is OpenStack's Future Still in the Cloud?

In this free-flowing discussion, three very experienced stackers will discuss the future of OpenStack and what it means for deployers and users.

OpenStack, The Production - Beyonce Thunderdome

This OpenStack perennial spectacle is back and more glamorous than evah (for reals). The Thunderdome was packed in Paris and Vancouver, and this...

Rolling in Style: Forty Five Days of IBM

Rolling in Style: Forty Five Days of IBM

It’s been a little over six weeks since we announced the acquisition of Blue Box by Big Blue. In the OpenStack ecosystem, the acquisition of a startup is often the beginning of the end: no more blog posts, no more tweets, no more of the former identity.

For us, it’s been the opposite, so I wanted to share a few thoughts about how the first 45 days of Blue Box inside Big Blue have gone.

First of all, I can’t remember a time in my professional life that been more of a blur of ideas and action, fueled by a phenomenal integration team, dramatically increased resources (and not just the monetary kind) and an over indulgence of...

Playing Chess with Jeff Bezos

Playing Chess with Jeff Bezos

Google has joined the OpenStack Foundation. Let me be the first to say, “Welcome to the party.” And in case you missed this little tidbit, today is earnings day for Google; a fitting day to join to the foundation.

Of course, the Google team is not new to OpenStack. Contributors from the Kubernetes team like Craig McLuckie and Kit Merker have already worked with the community for some time, even presenting their work integrating container management technology and with the Magnum project at the OpenStack Summit in Vancouver.

At this point, there are only two major cloud players left who are...

Cloud is No Longer Uncharted Territory

Cloud is No Longer Uncharted Territory

During my first trip out to the Blue Box office in Seattle this week, I thought about the coast-to-coast flight while relaxing at 40,000 feet. A journey of thousands of miles made completely routinely in about five hours. I remembered one of my favorite computer games as a kid—The Oregon Trail. It tried to capture the experience of leading a wagon train of settlers to the West Coast in 1848. The trip took almost six months and death along the way wasn’t uncommon, as the game frequently reminded you.

It’s amazing how that trip has transformed from perilous to commonplace. The need for safe travel drove massive technology advancements. We’ve seen a similar transformative push in cloud computing. Cloud computing is already having a major impact on IT services. The need for on-demand, self-service offerings from the developers and lines of business has made this a critical...

OpenStack: The Myth of the Middle

OpenStack: The Myth of the Middle

The middle is where self-declared reasonable minds gather to split the difference between seemingly irresolvable extremes.

And so it is with OpenStack.

Back in the wild-West days of Diablo and Essex, agile app dev ardents attracted by the open alternative of OpenStack had two choices: build it yourself (DIY), or sign up with Rackspace. Polar opposites in just about every regard.

Then, a wave of startups pledged to offer a middle ground, populated with software distributions and appliances to...
