The Tipping Point for Joining Blue Box, an IBM Company

The Tipping Point for Joining Blue Box, an IBM Company

The overall IBM Cloud Strategy is something customers have asked for in the market, and to date, no single vendor has been able to deliver. That strategy was the tipping point for me joining the team at Blue Box.

Prior to joining and in my first few weeks as an IBMer, I was hesitant about IBM being a 104 year old company. How could a company with so much–history–continue to innovate and be successful, when so many other companies are being disrupted daily by startups? For over 20 years, I had admired IBM for their inventions, software and hardware that power our lives and so much more....

Gartner Data Center Infrastructure & Operations Management 2015

Gartner Data Center Infrastructure & Operations Management 2015

A week ago I represented Blue Box at the Gartner Data Center, Infrastructure & Operations Management conference in Las Vegas. I had attended a couple of years ago and this year it seemed like the themes were more well-defined. I saw a healthy mix of “old school” infrastructure sessions and newer ones with speakers who delved into how IT is changing. It did feel like most of the sessions tried to link their content back to the value their business could derive from what was being covered.

Something else I noticed was that as Gartner has drawn some very opinionated stances on where things like “Cloud” will go, so too have the speakers who attend. The impression I got from many people I spoke to was that Gartner’s current message is that everything is going or will go to the public cloud. This could be more about how content was portrayed, but it was refreshing...

Deploying Mesos on Blue Box using Scalr

Deploying Mesos on Blue Box using Scalr

Infrastructure as a Service is only as powerful as the things you do with it. That’s why our focus at Blue Box, an IBM Company, is to provide an exceptional open private cloud experience without the operational hassles. This allows you to focus your resources on deploying and consuming advanced capabilities and services. A great example of how we do this is our use of tools like Scalr to deploy Apache Mesos.

If you’re not familiar with Scalr, it’s an open source cloud management platform that can integrate with many different clouds including OpenStack. In addition to cloud management, it provides deployment automation across clouds. In this great demo below, the Scalr team walks through deploying an Apache Mesos cluster to Blue Box Dedicated using Scalr.

IBM Interconnect 2016: The Premier Cloud and Mobile Conference

IBM Interconnect 2016: The Premier Cloud and Mobile Conference

It was just over six months ago that Blue Box was acquired by IBM, and now Blue Box Cloud has become a crucial component in the IBM Cloud portfolio, offering customers the ability to have a fully hosted, managed private cloud more easily accessible than ever before–in either SoftLayer data centers or the customer’s on-prem or colocation environment.

Now, the joint teams at Blue Box and IBM are gearing up for a whole host of events in 2016, including Cloud Expo Europe in London in mid-April, OpenStack Summit in Austin in late April and IBM’s own Interconnect in Las Vegas in February.

At its core, Interconnect is about bringing business and technology teams together to improve business outcomes, to find ways to increase...
